Early history of the "Carvers" Taken from a book published by T. Ellwood Zell; Philadelphia, Penn. Dedicated to Watson Co.

History of Byberry and Moreland Townships, Philadelphia, Penn. "Byberry" being named for a native town near Bristol, ENGLAND; and Poyneslink (Poquessing) Creek.

John & Mary Carver lived in St Albans in England and sailed to America on the "Welcome" from England.

John Carver with brothers William, Joseph and Jacob came to Penn from ENGLAND in 1682. All members of the "Society of Friends". Previous to emigrating from ENGLAND, John married Mary Lane at the Priory of St Albans. He took up a patent from Wm. Penn, 690 acres of land in the NE part of Byberry along Poquessing Creek. It includes site of old homestead which remained in the family for six generations, having descended successively from father to son, all of who were named John until 1864. He was a malster by profession and the malt house was continued until the fourth generation when the business became so poor it was given up.

A large chestnut tree, 6 ft in diameter on John Carver's farm was cut down by Watson Conly in 1885. It made 10 cords of wood and 180 posts, the largest tree of any kind with no doubt "Old Elm" which stood in from of Carver's house. On account of its size it was a curiosity. It stood alone in all its majesty, away from surrounding trees and was a noble specimen. Measuring 25 ft in circumference, it was 40 ft up to its branches and topmost limbs were 110 ft. high. Mahlon Carver stated that the tree made more than 25 cords of wood. On John Carver's, now Colonel Burling's, farm are two pear trees which were brought over from ENGLAND by the first John Carver in 1682 and were still alive and bearing fruit in 1856. The yearly meeting held in Burlington, NJ in 1694 recommended four Friends be appointed to have charge of youths belonging to the "Society", and in the Second month of that year John Carver of Byberry was appointed one of the four. It appears that some Friends in those days did not observe the Golden Rule and the meeting, feeling the necessity of having closer observance of the principles and customs of the Society, appointed in the 12th month of 1694, John Carver and John Brock to admonish those that profess "Gods" truth and do not walk answerably thereto. This was the origin of the appointment of overseers in Byberry Meeting. The custom continued to the present time.

  • 1721- A list of subscribers for maintaining the poor belonging to the Society in Byberry Preparative meeting: William Carver, John Carver, John Donlson, Thomas Walton, Joseph Gilbert, Henry Conly, Sam Scott, Jonathan Knight Jr, John Worthington, Abel Hengston, George James, Thomas Knight, Giles Knight, and Edwin Donalson.
  • 1740- John Carver resigned his situation as clerk of the meeting and was succeeded by William Dunkin.
  • 1749- The first account of the seventeen year locusts.
  • 1760- Two brick yards were operating successfully
  • 1880- Friends Church was erected.

John and Mary's daughter, Mary, was born in a cave near Philadelphia five days after landing the William Penn and Company, and was the first child of English parentage born in Pennsylvania. She married Isaac Knight of Ablington, who afterwards was a noted Minister of the Society of Friends.

John married Isabel Weldon of Ireland. Children John, Ann, Isaac. John married Rachel Naylor, daughter of Joseph Naylor of Southhampton and settled on the "Carver" homestead.

Ann - no record.

Isaac - married Phobe Walmsey. He died of smallpox in 1786, was somewhat noted for a literary man, was a wit, and had a poetical turn, was called "Poet Carver".

John Carver was a malster and ran a malt house.

Wilmer Carver and Elsie Hawley were 1st cousins. There are several variations of the story but they left the states and moved to Canada because "the family" frowned on first cousins marrying. The family stayed mostly separate not knowing much about each other.

In August 1900, Wilmer and Elsie moved to Canada and homesteaded in Alberta where their first two children Earl and Norma were born. The town was Urquhart, Alberta at that time. It is now Clive, Alberta.

In December 1912 they moved to Creston, British Columbia and later in 1913 to Canyon school district where both Earl and Norma had their schooling. Melva was born in Canyon.

Elsie and Wilmer visited in Idaho in 1920.

In 1920, they spent the winter in Penticton, British Columbia. In the spring of 1921 they moved to Armstrong, British Columbia where Verna was born in 1924.

None of Elsie and Wilmer's children were given middle names. This wasn't the tradition at that time.

Wilmer died in the Armstrong Hospital in 1926. Elsie and the children moved to Cedar Hill near Falkland where Earl had homesteaded.

Wilmer kept in touch with his sister, Laura, and father, Amos, after he moved to Canada until their death.

In 1951, Elsie moved to Vernon, British Columbia to be near family. About 1970, she moved into an old folks home.

In August 1994, Verna Schmietenknop Dandenault and Ross Carver (cousins) organized a family reunion of the US and Canadian relatives so they could get to know each other at last. 36 relatives and spouses attended and a new bi-annual (every other year) reunion has been planned so they won't lose track of each other again.

This is excerpts from a letter was written by Elsie Carver to Rose Bolam on June 30, 1956 from Vernon, British Columbia, Canada:

Dear niece Rose ---

Here its better than a month since your letter arrived and I had intended to soon reply, but I do not always do as I should. I seem very stuck at writing if I can put it off - so please, pardon.

It is just about a year now since you were here. I so wished you could have stayed longer and we could have had more chance to get acquainted. Robert will likely have filled out and be quite large now.

Was very sorry to hear of your little grandson's death. He will be greatly missed for awhile and always remembered dearly.

Thanks very much for the dates you sent me. The letter from Iva Lee last August gave me Stephen's date as Oct 25, 1950 - guess you left the 2 off the 25. She did not, though, tell me of Judith Ann so am glad you included it.

Your Aunt Ethel tells me Edith married "at home" Sept 3rd, 1955 to LR Mason. She had been divorced earlier in 1955.

I do hope you have found your work congenial and are getting along alright.

I might take a trip up into the Cariboo country to see Carl and Norma's folks, if none get down this summer. I found Earl and his 2 sons at Salmon Arm last summer when I got there the day you left. They came home with me at the end of the week and spent a few days with Verna, Melva and I. When his wife and one daughter were through and spent a few hours among the 3 of us. But it has been 2 years since I have seen Norma's. It is a nice trip up to Quisnel and Prince George after the roads have settled in the summer time. I am wondering if any will be down this week as our Christian Convention starts on the coming Thursday so we are hoping for nice weather.

Was out to Verna's about a week ago. The girls are growing, and are so much of a size strangers are unable to tell which is the oldest. Ann will be going to school this fall unless the difficulty of her not being 6 until November, hinders. Anyway she's registered for school, at present.

By the way Rose did you get any pictures alright while at Verna's? She tells me your father wrote that all of his were failures. The two I took; the one of Robt and the girls is fair, the other of you, Verna & children is a bit blurred owing to my not changing the focus in the camera. Should yours not have turned out well I could let you have a copy of these if you cared for them.

Your father and I have a cousin who was working in Seattle at Christmas time. That was one thing I meant to write and tell you earlier. She is a practical nurse and her home is at Clinton, Wash. RR1. She was getting anxious to get home again. She is a widow with a married son. She is a daughter of our Aunt Ada Mackie.

Her address at Xmas time was.

Mrs. Florence Langworthy 1305 E 43rd Apt 604 Settle

Which for all I can tell may be miles from you. She has not answered my letter, but had sent it to our Uncle Harry Hawley at Clinton, and he has since wrote me, something he'd never done before. He is 9 or 10 years older than I but I've never seen him since I was around 13 or 14 years.

That was interesting about the Robert Emmet Hawley. I rather think he is likely to be another branch of Grandpa Hawley's family - Our record only speaks of Grandpa having one brother, John Newton Hawley who grew to manhood. The other two and the 3 half brothers died while quite young.

There are Hawleys living north of here on the mainline RR that are neighbors to ones I knew that I meet at different times, but I know nothing of them only they are from the states. There were Hawleys in Oregon City, Oregon in paper mill business, I think, one could see the name on the mill when passing through. But your Grandma knew nothing of them.

Well perhaps this is enough scratching for this time. I'm getting to be such a scribbler at writing. I keep reasonably well and hope you and yours do also. If you see Olive tell her "hello" and that I've not forgotten her.

Much love from Aunt Elsie.

This is excerpts of a letter written to Iva Lee Hawley by Elsie Carver on August 7th, 1955:

Dear Iva Lee,

Have been wondering if you received the copy of Carver Record I sent you last April? However, I got a bit more Carver history from my cousin, Laura Shively and have made up another copy with this earlier data.

Laura, some years ago while visiting her paternal Aunt in Indiana went to see Mother's Cousin George Carver, who had a book with early Carver history and the record down to my Mother, your Grandmother, Ella Hawley, who's name was last recorded.

Laura was loaned and allowed to copy, what she wished from it. She went to New York in 1935, and went to the library there and also in Philadelphia, and found several names, the same as she already had but no connected history. Said she did not spend to much time looking as there were so many places she wished to see.

Laura sent me her copy, to copy from, as she was unable to make me a copy at that time - owning to convalescing from a broken arm, and a cataract operation. So had her daughter send what she had - which was in pencil on brown wrapping paper. It took quite a bit of study to fully understand, without her to explain it.

Please excuse mistakes & errors that have made imperfect pages - but you will likely wish to make up your lists in a form to suit your plan.

There were no later records of Carver's besides the Eli & Rachel branch that we belong with.

Some of the later descendants I did not copy dates, most I think you have - but if you wish any not there, I will supply what I have. Some I would like myself, are missing. Were not in Grandma's lists and not being in touch with some have not obtained some dates and names.

I shall send this to your Idaho address, though I expect you may have moved if you have fulfilled your last winter plans, but perhaps it can be forwarded.

Have been hoping all summer that you would take a trip up this way, and wondering if I'd be here when you did. However Verna is generally to be found. I spent two weeks up north with Earl's and Norma's at Easter, also a week two or three times other times nearer home.

All folks up this way have kept fairly well. Though the hot weather seemed to be rather - disagreeable at times. Now will let this do if all not clear ask and I'll help if I can. Hope you all keep well,

Love to all your Aunt Elsie Carver

This is excerpts of a letter was written by Elsie Carver to Rose Bolam on Feb 18, 1966 from Vernon, British Columbia, Canada:

Dear Rose -

My birthday was rather drawn out, for I had to wash that morning - it being the day allotted to me to have the use of the washing machine. Verna & girls came in after school time bring a pot of "mums" and birthday cake, which we proceeded to enjoy - except Ann she was having an appointment for tooth filling and didn't get here till the rest had to get ready for home trip and could only manage a cup of coffee - so had to take her & Frank's piece of cake home with them.

Nancy is booked to go into hospital 28, if there is a bed open for her, to have her tonsils removed next A.M. They have been giving her quite a bit of trouble this winter.

The 29th of Dec - I went up to Quisnel with Cheryl & Jimmy as they went back after spending Xmas with Cheryl folk. They had told me when they can down the 24th that they had left Norma in hospital with pneumonia - but thought she would be soon home again, but when we got up there found she had been very ill and pleurisy had also set in. So she had a pretty miserable time and spent 29 days in hospital. I had gone up with idea of coming back in a couple weeks by bus. But my stay didn't end till the 1st of Feb and Normal had been home about 10 days. She stepped outside that A.M. while Lois & I got into the car to go to depot. Lois came down with me as they wouldn't let me come alone - stayed over one day then took bus back as Norma would be needing her. Norma would manage meals for herself & Bill but that was about the extent of her strength.

Earl & Bertha moved into their new house Xmas - New Years week. A larger house and far from finished, but the old house was threatening to fall down.

So have a happy birthday - its my oldest grandchilds day too - Grace. Earl's oldest girl, she will be 28. Jimmy's wife Cheryl will be 22 on the 24th Feb.

Love from Aunt Elsie.

Hello- Benbow, Modlin lists, et. al.-

Here is a transcript I made of an interview I found in my family notes. If you are interested you might want to clip and paste this into your

notes for Mary MODLIN, daughter of Dillon Modlin (Maudlin) and Elizabeth DRAPER, my 2x great grandmother. Leudoska Benbow Byrket was the sister of my great grandmother, Josie Benbow. Clearly this transcript reflects a first person understanding from Mary Modlin Benbow who personally knew most of the people mentioned in this note.

Mary Modlin Benbow, wife of Enos, was born on Oct 8, 1838, making her 90 years and 3 months old on the day this interview was written. One surprise I found in these notes was that Aaron Benbow, son of John and Charity Mendenhall Benbow, was born "someplace in Ohio". I had previously listed him born in NC, and perhaps the censuses might also shows him as born in NC, but he was actually born in Ohio; I found someone else had him listed as born in Clinton Co., OH, which I did not verify. Another surprise was that Mary Modlin Benbow had seen Hannah Maudlin who married Robert Brattain (as his 2nd wife). My theory, and this is a unproven theory only, is that Robert Brattain and his first wife, Mary Millikan, were the parents of the Mary (---?---) WALL who married my ancestor Samuel WALL and had eldest son Brittain WALL. Brittain WALL and his family did go to Grant Co, IN at about the same time that Dillon Modlin did, in 1837. I wonder if they travelled together. We know that Brittain WALL (1798-1875) was also in Wayne Co, IN but he was also in Howard Co, IN as well. My WALL line comes from Brittain's brother Wiley WALL (c1799-c1871) who married Jereter (b. Aug 31, 1802 probably Randolph Co., NC -Feb 25, 1876 Henry Co., IN)

Notes for LIZZIE URSULA MARSHALL:  Notes from my mom: (Iva Corinne Benbow Robertson) May, 2000

Just off the top of my head a few things about my Grandma Benbow. I really loved that woman. I think I have always tried to pattern myself after her. She was rotund, and I'm more like a bouncing rubber ball every day. She was always pleasant and never gave too loud an opinion. I used to be pleasant and I do give a loud opinion. So guess I'm not as much like her as I would like to be.

She lived over the general store in Union. There were three ladies up there in apartments. Hers was the last one and they shared a communal bathroom. It was only a stool and sink at the end of a long, dark hall. You couldn't turn the light on until you got half way down, that was scary. She had an ice box in the summer and in the winter put her milk and butter outside on the roof of the building adjoining theirs. She always had Wheaties for breakfast. I can still smell the smell in her kitchen of a not too clean dish rag but then they didn't think about germs in their dishrags. She always put a slice of apple in her cookies to make them soft. She made rag rugs and I got to help her. She would cut and tear the strips, sew the tops together and then I would braid them. Then she would wind them around together and stitch them together. I could probably still make one of those. We used to read her little blue book a lot and she always promised me I could have it. We talked about I think it was her little girl that got her dress caught on fire and died a few days later. She also talked about Grandpa Benbow, he was 6'5" with a long gray beard. Of course, he died before I was born. I honestly don't know what she lived on unless it was social security which had only recently been established because FDR put it into effect in the early 30's I believe. I slept there a lot and she used to turn her bed down every day and 'air' it out. Then we would make the bed later. No, she would because my side was up against the wall. My job for my family was to buy groceries every week. I bought them for her too. Although I really don't remember her ever eating much besides Wheaties and cookies. We used to look out the two windows in her living room that overlooked the busy streets of Union. When she had to go into a nursing home (she may have had Alzheimer s because she didn't know too many people) I couldn't go see her. Just like I couldn't open that blue book for a long time, too many memories. Mom wouldn't let me go to her funeral because I was pregnant (when wasn't I?) and it might mar the baby.

Daddy was a "great" fisherman. Loved to dance. Mom baked angel food cakes from scratch - yummy - and cinnamon rolls and buns. My friends always wanted to come to our house on those days! Never heard her raise her voice! Milked cows at Butch and Nells for the milk. Showed us kids how but it never "took"! Had a big garden - hard workers!
